Father Forgets

Just something to think about from time to time....
"Father Forgets" by W. Livingston Larned.......

Listen, son: I am saying this as you lie asleep, one little paw crumpled under your cheek and the blond curls stickily wet on your damp forehead. I have stolen into your room alone. Just a few minutes ago, as I sat reading my paper in the library, a stifling wave of remorse swept over me. Guilty I came to your bedside.

There are the things I was thinking, son: I had been cross to you. I scolded you as you were dressing for school because you gave your face merely a dab with a towel. I took you to tassk for not cleaning your shoes. I called out angrily when you threw some of your things on the floor.

At breakfast I found fault, too. You spilled things. You gulped down your food. You put your elbows on the table. You spread butter too thick on your bread. And as you started off to play and I made for my train, you turned and waved and called, "Goodbye, Daddy!" and I frowned, and said in reply, "Hold your shoulders back!"

Then it began all over again in the late afternoon. As I came up the road I spied you, down on your knees, playing marbles. There were holes in your stockings. I humiliated you before your boyfriends by marching you ahead of me to the house. Stockings were expensive-and if you had to buy them you would be more careful! Imagine that, son, from a father!

Do you remember, later, when I was reading in the library, how you came in timidly, with a sort of hurt look in your eyes? When I glanced up over my paper, impatient at the interruption, you hesitated at the door. "What is it you want?" I snapped.

You said nothing, but ran across in one tempestuous plunge, and threw your arms around my neck and kissed me, and your small arms tightened with an affection that God had set blooming in your heart and which even neglect could not wither. And then you were gone, pattering up the stairs.

Well, son, it was shortly afterwards that my paper slipped from my hands and a terrible sickening fear came over me. What has habit been doing to me? The habit of finding fault, of reprimanding-this was my reward to you for being a boy. It was not that I did not love you; it was that I expected too much of youth. i was measuring you by the yardstick of my own years.

And there was so much that was good and fine and true in your character. The little heart of yours was as big as the dawn itself over the wide hills. This was shown by your spontaneous impulse to rush in and kiss me good night. Nothing else matters tonight, son. I have come to your bedside in the darkness, and I have knelt there, ashamed!

It is a feeble atonement; I know you would not understand these things if I told them to you during waking hours. But tomorrow I will be a real daddy! I will chum with you, and suffer when you suffer, and laugh when you laugh. I will bite my tongue when impatient words come. I will keep saying as if it were a ritual: "He is nothing but a boy-a little boy!"

I am afraid I have visualized you as a man. Yet as I see you now, son, crumpled and weary in your cot, I see that you are still a baby. Yesterday you were in your mother's arms, your head on her shoulder. I have asked too much, too much, yet given too little of myself. Promise me, as I teach you to have the manners of a man, that you will remind me how to have the loving spirit of a child.

Are you guilty of judging?

Have you ever been guilty of judging someone? I think it's pretty safe to safe that we have all done it. I know I have been guilty of it many times.

Luke 6: 37-38 tells us: "Do not judge and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you".

Now, I know that you can recall a time in your life when you witnessed someone do something, or heard of someone doing something that was wrong that you simply did not agree with. You did it, you judged them. Every one of us has the potential to make mistakes and we will continue to make them along the way. However, in the grand scheme of things, if you look at you life as a fruit bearing tree for a moment, our relationship with God and our goal is to produce good fruit. When we look at a tree's fruit, we do not look at one moment in time, rather a period of production. The fruit reveals the nature of the root, and each tree is recognized by its own fruit. Bad trees do not produce good fruit, nor do good trees produce bad fruit. What I am trying to say here is that it comes from the heart. The product of life reflects the heart, or our inner character and what Jesus calls the treasure of the heart.

Now, think back to a time when someone has judged you. This undoubtedly will not be very hard for you to remember, and it is probably still very tender and fresh in your mind no matter how long ago it happened. When judging us it is almost impossible for them to; #1 have all the facts and truth of what happened; and #2 often times they are judging you based on their self constructed opinions of reality. It took me a long time to realize that it is not my place to judge others. I will profess to you that within myself, I have an incredible feeling of liberation and peace in releasing those judgments to God. To be able to give it over to Him will relieve so much tension and stress in your life. So think about how you felt deep inside when someone judged you. I know how it feels as I am sure you do as well. I know the treasure of my heart is good, and you know the treasure of your heart is good, but that still does not take away the pain of being judged by someone. So the next time you are quick to judge, think of how it hurt when you were the one that was judged.

Now to help us understand this verse a little more, let's define some of the terms used in it.

A good measure: This refers to purchasing a commodity of some sort where the amount measured out is not short, skimpy, or even fair, but a good measurement.

Pressed down: The grain in the measuring container is pressed down, so that all the spaces are filled and the container holds as much as possible.

Shaken together: The measuring container is shaken, so that the grain can fill every empty space.

Running over: The container is filled and the top is a rounded heap so great that it overflows the container.

Will be poured into your lap: The picture is of this measure now being poured in the individual's container which is the fold of his outer garment. Between the shoulders and the belt, this outer cloak would be loose and could form a kind of pocket into which this measurement could be poured.

Finally... For measure you use: If we judge, condemn and withhold forgiveness, the same will happen to us.

My friends, God will deal with us this way. Our behavior towards others determines God's behavior towards us.

Matthew 5: 12, 14, 15 tells us:
"And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors."
"For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your Heavenly Father will also forgive you."
"But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions."

You see, God prefers to act in Mercy, but those of us that want to put another on trial, simply invite God to put them on trial, and he who condemns another for his failings, invites God to condemn him for his own failings. How do you prefer to act? In mercy...... or are you quick to judge.

One last verse I want to share with you, tells me that Paul understood the Gospel. He got it!

1 Corinthians 4: 4-5
"My conscience is clear, but that does not make me innocent. It is the Lord who judges me. Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait till the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of men's hearts. At that time each will receive his praise from God."

He speaks to us........, are you listening?

Spending time in God's great outdoors means different things to different people. All of us are at various milestones on our path to salvation. During my journey, I have learned to take time and pause to appreciate His little gifts and signs along the way. Maybe it's from that little bit of wisdom that comes with age, but I tend to think it is my desire to become closer to Him than I can ever imagine.

Hebrews 2: 4 "God also testified to it by signs, wonders and various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will."

Every day, all around us He speaks to us and shows us the direction to take. From the time of Adam and Eve, God has given us all free will and the ability to choose our own path. Every one of us has taken a wrong turn sometime in our life. We have all stumbled and fallen. Let's face it, when we fall, we sometimes fall hard, but He is always there for us, to help us up and to lean on even when we feel like we do not want to get up.

Isaiah 40: 28-31 "Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint."

Each time the Lord has spoken to me through the outdoors, it was a time of great need in my life. These were times where the sole purpose of being in the outdoors was to simply be close to Him and experience His peace and grace. I have never asked Him to speak to me or to show me a sign, but each time I have needed Him he has been there. It is a feeling that I have difficulty explaining and you may not understand it unless you have experienced it yourself? If you share these experiences with someone, they often wrtie them off as coincidence, or just something special you experienced in the outdoors. Our God is such an amazing God and we all know that He does things in His own time. The messages I have experienced and sign's I have witnessed, often come late in the process, long after I have learned a valuable lesson or gained the wisdom that is beyond my years. It is a part of the process of life, and if you look, He will always be there for us. Take time to pause and experience your surroundings in the outdoors, and my friends you will experience His message, grace and peace.

John 14: 27 "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give you. I do not give you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid."

His signs to us come when you least expect it, but as long as you never part from faith and hope, they will appear before you; sometimes on a magical canvas in the beautiful blue sky before your eyes.

Pruning the deadwood

John 15: 2 describes the standard work of any vinedresser or gardner, but in this case we are the vine and our Heavenly Father is the vinedresser. Without the vinedresser caring for and pruning the vine, it would become wild and it's productivity would decrease greatly.

The vinedresser engages in two activities here, first the fruitless branches are removed. Then the fruitful branches are pruned or clensed, which translates to more fruit bearing. Here, both actions promote fruit bearing. The vinedresser removes deadwood from the vine for the betterment of the vine and branches. Throughout Jesus' parables, a branch or plant that is without fruit is abnormal or defective and does not indicate spiritual life. I think back to all the deadwood I had and how I opened up and let our Heavenly Father trim it all away. Since then, so much fruit has been beared in my life. Are you due for a pruning?

Mind Control

Summer is fastly approaching and the hunting seasons are winding down as we all look to forward to fall to renew our passion for hunting. During this summer as you practice shooting your archery equipment, I encourage you to try a new exercise in your practice routine. In archery there comes a point when your level of accuracy reaches such an extreme level that improvement is difficult to see or guage.

One of the ways that we can take our shooting to the next level has to do with understanding how the mind works and your ability to take advantage of it. First we have to understand that the mind has two parts or two ways of thinking. They are the conscious and the subconscious. The conscious only thinks or works on only one process at any given time. The subconscious is the multi-tasker and has the ability to control hundreds or thousands of processes all at the same time. One way to train yourself to shoot using the subconscious mind is to shoot at a close range of about five yards with your eyes closed. Many people call this exercise blind bale shooting. This type of practice allows the conscious mind to learn new skills, but through repetitive practice the new skills become absorbed by the subconscious mind and store them in it's highly sophisticated memory bank. It becomes a function or a part of your shooting that you do without thinking about it. The subconscious mind works in harmony this way. By keeping your eyes closed and shooting at a very short distance for safety, you stop the conscious mind from doing what it usually does; aiming at the target. By doing this, you free your mind up for use. Now you can focus on another task, something in your shooting form that you want to improve. One of the things I am currently working on is a smooth trigger control on my release. Or, it may be that you are trying to improve your follow through after the shot. By doing this specific task repetitvely, you will engrain this into your subconscious mind and it will become second nature in your shooting form.

Most Psychologists say it takes about twenty one days to learn a new habit. Give it a try, and stick with it and you will be amazed at your results as you take your shooting to the next level. Work on one thing at a time over the summer and by the time you hit the stand this fall, you will be ready with a renewed confidence and level of expertise. It is also important to give yourself some positive reinforcement. If the shot felt good, or the release was flawless, tell yourself, "good shot".

Genesis 27: 3

The power of the tongue.

The tongue is a very small part of our body and it is often overlooked and taken for granted. At sometime in our life, and maybe many times in our life, we realize and are reminded just how powerful the tongue is. Whether we are unleashing our tongue on someone else, or maybe we are on the receiving end. The bible tells us that our words are so powerful that they can bless or curse, encourage or discourage, hurt or heal, tear down or build up. These facts written so many thousands of years ago, could not be more true today. In God's country we carry a rifle or a bow, and our ammunition is a bullet or an arrow with a razor sharp broadhead. In everyday life the tongue can be a weapon and the words we speak are the ammunition that can be sharper and cut deeper than any broadhead or jagged edge of a bullet fragment. James 3: 8-9

Only with the help of the Holy Spirit, you and I can be saved and delivered from the destructive power of our very own words. Think back to a particular time in your life, when you lashed out at someone. Afterwords, you were so sorry and stricken with such guilt when you witnessed the damage of your words and how you wished you could take them back. We have all done it, and I know that many of us, with myself being at the top of the list can remember it very well. We need to be patient and mindful of the power of our words and sometimes take a step back to look at the entire picture, instead of the very moment that you are wrapped up in with intense emotion. Now think back to a time when you offered a word of praise to someone who looked up to you, or words of encouragement to a stranger in need. Chances are that person still remembers you and whether they realize it or not, the power of the Holy Spirit formed and empowered those words from your tongue. Your faith enabled you to help someone. Do you remember how good it felt? Proverbs 18: 21

As we read Mark 11: 13-14 and 20 we see an example of how words can bring forth death and destruction.

On the contrary, an example of how words can bring life forth can be found in John 11: 43-44 .

Lastly, a couple of Proverbs to think about are:
Proverbs 12: 25
Proverbs 16: 24

True Love!

Think back to the time when you met that someone special and he or she entered into your life. From the very begining, you felt true love and knew he or she was the one for you. Remember how you felt during that time and how you wanted everyone to know about it? Think of how you wanted to share it with all of your friends and family. Now think back to the time when you told the Lord that you loved Him and that he was number one in your life. Did you shout from the top of the mountain how perfect his Love is? Did you tell your friends and family how wonderful He is? Have you spread the good news of how He is always there to listen to your problems? Did you tell anyone when He saved you from destruction? Have you shared just how wonderful, perfect, understanding, loving, patient, unselfish, considerate and forgiving God really is? He is the best thing that has ever happened to any of us and it is important not to be scared to shout His name from the highest mountain or lowest valley. Wherever you are, be thankful that you have found the love of your life and do your part to lead others to Him. The author C. S. Lewis refers to pride as a sin. Do not let pride get in your way. Be humble before the Lord. Without the Lord we are nothing. Take His hand and share His love with all mankind.

1 Corinthians: 13

I would like to personally welcome each of you to the Hunting the Sacred blog. I encourage you to become involved in our community by posting in the forum, and listening to our weekly podcast. As we strive to build a community of bloggers that love Christ and the outdoors, your comments and words of encouragement mean the world to us. We want to hear your voice as you share your thoughts and experiences in the outdoors and how you have experienced His grace.

This community was born out of my love for Jesus, the outdoors, and my desire to spread His word. I have a longing to share His word with those of you who already know Christ, but more importantly, those of you that do not have a relationship with Him. Hunting and the outdoors are simply the vehicle in which I choose to do it with. Each one of us is at a different point in our spiritual journey, and some of us have yet to take the first step. It is not my intention to push my beliefs on anyone. Rather, I am here to quench the thirst for the hearing of His word that so many of you long for just as I do. The outdoors is the place that I feel closest to God and I know many of you share those same feelings and emotions that well up inside me. I do not know where He will take this website, blog, podcast or community, but I feel compelled and driven to humbly put it out there in the name of Jesus.

As I think about the commitments and priorities in my life, I am reminded of "The parable of Talents"(link), the teaching in Matthew 25: 14-30. When we are born everyone is given talents, they may be opportunities in life, abilities, or resources. We are given the talents of what God wants us to have. The more talents you are given, the more responsibility you have in life. In the parable, two of the servants doubled their talents. They immediately put them to work as soon as they received them. For me, this translates to giving a full commitment to Christ. You notice that when they gave back, they did not give back only 80% and keep 20% for themselves, or 70/30. We need to use our lives to return 100%. As we prepare for the coming of Christ, we need to do more than just play it safe or only do a little bit. There is no half way; we do not get to choose when and where we want to be a Christian. We have given our lives over to Christ in exchange for eternal life, but it has to be all or nothing. We do not get to worship other idols. If you are an avid hunter or fisherman, think about how much time and energy you devote to your passion? Now think about how much time you really devote to God, and secondly, your spouse. I sometimes get lost in my passion for hunting and take Christ for granted. Me thinking Christ will always be there for me is not enough. I need to continually give God 100% and take that 100% and turn it into another 100%. My heart swells and my pulse quickens as someday I look forward to hearing those chilling words "well done, good and faithful servant".

I look forward to getting to know each of you, as we share together our experiences in the outdoors, and more importantly in life. Proverbs 27: 17 "As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another".
